Purpose of Role
To actively operate, maintain and service various forms of equipment (cranes, trucks, forklifts, high-ups, and any other equipment used in the section) used in operations across the mine, by tending to both the planned and break down maintenance requirements of the machinery on the mine, guided by the Foreman and respective Artisan to keep the machinery of Tharisa Minerals (TM) operating optimally.
Role Context
Equipment Operations
- Conduct full service, maintenance and repairs across the various machines used across TM by analysing and conducting routine planned and unplanned repairs and services ensuring optimal functionality of the various machines on the mine.
- Conduct continuous risk assessments throughout the day by proactively identifying and reporting identified risks within the areas of operation and collaborating with the various departments to support and maintain a safe working environment.
- Conduct a prestart safety checklist by inspecting all allocated mining machines, identifying any risks and concerns, and identifying the root cause of any concerns identified by the respective machine operators and ensure that the machine is repaired and restored to optimal functionality within agreed timelines.
- Manage the movement of components as required for the servicing and maintenance of the various machines by adhering to all relevant safety protocols reducing the risk of injury or damage to both the staff and the components being operated.
- Monitor the rigging practices throughout the servicing and repairing of the various machines within the Engineering department by inspecting the rigged equipment before movement takes place, driving safety and operational efficiency.
- Conduct on-site (in-pit) maintenance and repairs, as per allocation of breakdown, by assessing the inoperable machine, identifying the cause of the breakdown, and initiating repairs once confirmed by the respective Artisan and Foreman to return the machine to optimal functionality as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.
- Conduct post-repair testing on the allocated machines by running routine functional tests on the repaired machine (as authorised to operate) ensuring repairs were effectively completed and the machine can be returned to operation.
- Complete and record all job cards per allocated machine, tracking and recording all maintenance conducted and repairs completed allowing for the tracking of machine longevity and future planned maintenance.
- Conduct daily housekeeping across the various machines that this role has worked with by cleaning the cabins, conducting an end of shift inspection on the machines, and ensuring any cleaning is scheduled accordingly to keep the machinery in peak operational condition.
- Maintain all health and safety operations within own area of responsibility by identifying and managing hazards ensuring the operational environment remains safe for oneself and others.
- Actively prioritise the maintenance of the various forms of machinery and equipment based on urgency, by collaborating with the various departments and the Engineering Foreman to ensure the most urgent equipment is prioritised.
Resource Management
- Determine resource needs within own area of responsibility to achieve individual role outcomes.
- Collect spares from warehouse, ensuring sectional spares register is updated.
- Request required assets and resources for the fulfilment of work duties to attain quality work outputs.
- Use assets and resources optimally within own area of responsibility.
- Monitor the use of assets and resources within the team and own area of responsibility, to ensure assets and resources are consistently and appropriately utilised and managed.
- Manage team and support services including standby resources during breakdowns by communicating failures/breakdowns in process to limit downtime while adhering to safety standards.
Compliance, Risk and Safety
- Develop an appropriate plant specific Risk Management Policy and appropriate Procedures and Standards (Codes of Practice)
- Comply to, and assist with, waste management in the area of work and/or in the section.
- Oversee the implementation of a proactive approach to all safety protocols by creating awareness of hazards and behaviour to enforce compliance to minimise risk of accidents and injuries within the plant.
- Conduct regular safety inspections, provide relevant and necessary training to ensure all employees adhere to safety guidelines all the time.
- Conduct risk and safety inspections, identifying and reporting any risks within the allocated area of operations and completing the requisite checklist recording the associated risks.
- Conduct continuous risk assessments throughout the day by proactively identifying and reporting identified risks within the areas of operation and collaborating with the various departments to support and maintain a safe working environment.
Qualifications:
- Matric -Grade 12 (NQF4).
- Trade Certificate: Diesel Mechanic/ Earth Moving Equipment Mechanic / Auto-Electrical is advantageous
- Relevant licenses and certifications to operate the various machines on the mine (High-ups, Telescopic Boom Handler, Mobile Cranes, basic rigging and Service Trucks).
Job specific experience:
- Minimum of 1-2 years’ experience in the engineering environment of a mine, having operated high-ups, cranes, and other respective machines.
