Greenway Farms is seeking a qualified and experienced Fleet Motor Mechanic to support our Maintenance Department across multiple satellite farm locations in Tarlton, Christiana, and Bokpoort. This role is critical to ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and safety of our fleet—comprising bakkies, forklifts, and generators.
We are looking for a proactive and hands-on professional with strong mechanical and electrical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in dynamic farm environments. Travel between farm locations is required.
Minimum Requirements
- Education:
hHigher Certificate or equivalent
Red Seal Motor Mechanic Certificate or equivalent
Recognized apprenticeship or technical qualification in automotive, diesel mechanics, or a related field
- Experience:
3–5 years in fleet maintenance (bakkies, generators, forklifts)
Experience in farm or industrial settings advantageous
Familiarity with hydraulic systems, electric engines, and small engine repairs
Certifications (Preferred)
Forklift Maintenance Certification
Diesel Mechanic or Mechanical Fitter Certification
Valid Driver’s License (with a clean driving record)
Health & Safety Training (e.g., First Aid, OSHA or equivalent)
Physical Requirements
Capable of lifting heavy equipment
Comfortable working outdoors and in variable conditions
Able to kneel, bend, crouch, and stand for extended periods
Duties and Responsibilities
- Fleet Maintenance and Repairs:
- Perform regular maintenance (oil changes, brake inspections, tire checks and all other inspections) on bakkies, forklifts, and generators across all satellite farm locations.
- Diagnose and repair mechanical issues on-site or in the workshop to minimize vehicle downtime.
- Troubleshoot complex electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems in bakkies, generators, and forklifts.
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs for each vehicle and equipment, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and company standards.
- Preventive Maintenance Programs:
- Develop and implement a preventive maintenance schedule for all fleet vehicles and equipment to ensure optimal performance and reduce unscheduled repairs.
- Monitor equipment usage to identify patterns that may require adjustments to the maintenance schedule.
- On-Site Support:
- Travel to 3 satellite farm locations as needed to provide support, troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Provide emergency breakdown service and ensure minimal disruption to farm operations.
- Equipment Installation and Calibration:
- Assist with the installation, calibration, and commissioning of new generators and forklifts.
- Work closely with the Operations and Procurement teams to ensure all new equipment is delivered in optimal working condition.
- Parts Management:
- Order, maintain, and manage parts inventory for bakkies, forklifts, and generators to ensure quick repairs and minimize downtime.
- Ensure parts are stored and handled properly to prevent damage and maintain compliance with safety regulations.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all health and safety guidelines to ensure a safe working environment for both yourself and colleagues.
- Comply with environmental regulations in the disposal of used parts, oils, and fluids.
- Ensure that all maintenance and repairs are done in line with legal requirements and manufacturer recommendations.
Milestones and Deliverables (Year 1):
- First 3 months:
- Complete an initial assessment of all fleet vehicles (bakkies, generators, forklifts) and equipment across all satellite farm locations.
- Establish baseline maintenance schedules and implement necessary repairs for any immediate issues.
- Develop and communicate a preventive maintenance plan for the fleet.
- End of Year 1:
- Successfully complete preventive maintenance on all farm equipment at least once in the year, with minimal unplanned downtime.
- Develop a streamlined parts inventory system for all key equipment and ensure that stock levels are maintained for emergency repairs.
- Establish regular travel and maintenance schedules between farm locations to optimize efficiency and ensure fleet reliability.
