A well-known hotel and golf course in Phalaborwa is seeking the services of a Machine Operator. The Golf Course Machine Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of turf care equipment to ensure the golf course is kept in top playing condition.
This role involves the use of specialized machinery for mowing, aeration, topdressing, and other key maintenance tasks. The ideal candidate will have experience working with turf equipment, strong attention to detail, and a commitment to delivering high-quality course conditions.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Equipment Operation & Course Maintenance
- Operate a range of turf maintenance machinery, including fairway mowers, greens mowers, aerators, top dressers, tractors, and utility vehicles.
- Assist in mowing fairways, greens, tees, roughs, and other areas to precise specifications.
- Carry out aeration, scarification, rolling, and topdressing to promote healthy turf growth.
- Ensure all machinery is used safely and efficiently to minimize disruption to play.
2. Equipment Care & Maintenance
- Perform routine checks and basic maintenance on machinery before and after use (e.g., checking oil levels, cleaning decks, sharpening blades).
- Report any mechanical issues to the Golf Course Mechanic or Head Greenkeeper.
- Follow proper fuel and lubrication procedures to ensure machine longevity.
3. Course Presentation & Environmental Responsibility
- Maintain a high standard of course presentation, ensuring clean and tidy working areas.
- Follow best practices for sustainable turf management, including responsible fuel and chemical handling.
- Assist in waste management, including debris removal and composting of grass clippings.
4. Health & Safety Compliance
- Adhere to all health and safety guidelines regarding machinery operation and personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Operate machinery responsibly around golfers, staff, and visitors to minimize risk.
- Report any hazards or safety concerns immediately to management.
5. Additional Responsibilities
- Assist the greenkeeping team with other tasks such as bunker raking, divot repairs, and irrigation system maintenance when required.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions to improve skills and stay updated on best practices.
Qualifications:
- A relevant qualification in turf management, horticulture, or a related is an advantage.
- Valid driver's license.
- Certification in safe machinery operation (desirable but not required).
Experience
- Previous experience operating golf course, agricultural, or turf maintenance machinery (preferred).
- Basic mechanical knowledge and ability to perform minor equipment maintenance.
