Job Summary
The Small Appliance Electrical Technician is responsible for diagnosing and repairing small electrical household appliances such as Kettles, Toasters, Air Fryers etc. The role involves working in repair sites, or in retail environments, ensuring appliances function safely and efficiently. The technician is expected to provide excellent customer service, advise customers on proper appliance use, and maintain accurate records of repairs and parts used.
Key Responsibilities
Diagnosis and Repair:
Inspect and test small appliances to identify malfunctions, such as electrical faults, short circuits, or defective components.
Trace electrical circuits using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, circuit testers) and refer to schematic drawings or product manuals to locate issues like shorts or grounds, or non-functioning componentry.
Disassemble appliances to diagnose problems, repair or replace faulty parts (e.g., switches, wiring, circuit boards), and reassemble units to manufacturer specifications.
Test repaired appliances to ensure proper functionality before returning to customers.
Maintenance and Installation:
Perform routine maintenance on small appliances to prevent future issues, such as cleaning components or adjusting settings.
Advise customers on correct usage and maintenance to extend appliance lifespan.
Customer Service:
Communicate effectively with clients to understand appliance issues, provide repair estimates, and explain repair processes in an understandable manner.
Offer recommendations on whether to repair or replace appliances based on cost and condition.
Provide exceptional customer service to ensure client satisfaction and address inquiries or concerns.
Documentation and Inventory:
Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and time spent on each job.
Prepare repair cost estimates and document inventory of parts used or needed.
Keep organised records for SLA/supplier claims or future reference.
Safety and Compliance:
Adhere to industry safety standards, electrical codes, and company policies during repairs and installations.
Ensure safe handling of electrical systems to prevent shocks, fires, or other hazards.
Stay updated on the latest appliance technologies, repair techniques, and safety regulations.
Team Collaboration:
Work independently or as part of a team, assisting junior technicians or collaborating with other maintenance staff.
Provide mentorship or on-the-job training to junior technicians when required.
Key Skills and Qualifications
Educational Requirements:
- Minimum: Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent (e.g., NQF Level 4).
- Vocational or technical training in electrical systems, appliance repair, or a related field (e.g., N1-N3 Electrical Engineering or similar).
- Optional: National Appliance Service Technician Certification (NASTeC) or equivalent, such as a Trade Test Certificate for Electrical or Appliance Repair.
Experience:
- Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in small appliance repair, electrical systems, or a related field (e.g., HVAC, electronics repair).
- Proven experience diagnosing and repairing small electrical appliances (e.g., microwaves, kettles, toasters).
- On-the-job training or apprenticeship experience is highly valued.
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools (e.g., multimeters, voltage testers, screwdrivers, pliers) and hand/power tools for appliance repair.
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems, wiring, and troubleshooting techniques for small appliances.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and blueprints.
- Familiarity with safety protocols and compliance with South African electrical standards (e.g., SANS 10142-1 for electrical installations).
Soft Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities to diagnose complex appliance issues.
- Strong communication skills to explain technical issues to customers clearly.
- Exceptional customer service skills to build trust and ensure client satisfaction.
- Attention to detail and accuracy in diagnosing and repairing appliances.
Physical Requirements:
- Physical dexterity to handle small components and work in confined spaces.
- Ability to stand, bend, or work in awkward positions for extended periods.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends or overtime, if required.
- Basic computer skills for documenting repairs or using work order software.
Working Conditions
Environment: Work may be performed in repair shops, customers’ homes, or retail service centres. Technicians may encounter dusty or cramped spaces when repairing appliances.
Hazards: Exposure to electrical shocks, minor burns, or other risks associated with electrical systems; adherence to safety protocols is critical.
Schedule: Typically full-time, with potential for overtime during peak periods. May include emergency callouts for urgent repairs (e.g., malfunctioning appliances).
Travel: Frequent travel to client locations within a region (e.g., Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Pretoria, Gauteng, KwaZulu Natal) may be required.
