Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate, professional, and ethically grounded Social Worker to join our multidisciplinary team at a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre. The Social Worker will play a key role in assessing, supporting, and guiding clients through their treatment journey, helping them to address the social, emotional, psychological, and practical challenges associated with addiction and recovery.
Key Responsibilities: Clinical Duties:
- Conduct biopsychosocial assessments for all incoming clients.
- Develop individualised treatment and discharge plans in collaboration with the clinical team.
- Provide individual and group therapy, psychoeducation, and case management.
- Facilitate family meetings and family therapy where appropriate.
- Identify and support clients with dual diagnoses, trauma histories, or complex social needs.
- Monitor client progress, maintain clinical notes, and participate in case conferences and team reviews.
Aftercare and Discharge Planning:
- Coordinate referrals to external treatment services, shelters, halfway houses, and outpatient programs.
- Assist clients in re-establishing employment, education, and social reintegration plans.
- Help clients apply for government assistance, ID documentation, housing, and medical services as needed.
- Liaise with community organisations, probation officers, and family members when appropriate.
Ethical & Legal Responsibilities:
- Ensure compliance with South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) ethical standards and registration requirements.
- Maintain client confidentiality and appropriate record-keeping in line with POPIA and facility guidelines.
- Report safeguarding concerns and manage crisis interventions, including mental health or domestic violence issues.
Collaboration and Professional Development:
- Participate in weekly clinical team meetings, supervision, and training.
- Collaborate with counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, nursing staff, and support workers to ensure a holistic approach to care.
- Contribute to the development and review of policies and procedures relevant to social work and discharge planning.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work (BSW) from an accredited institution (Master’s preferred).
- Registered with the SACSSP and in good professional standing.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in addiction treatment, mental health, or a related social service setting.
- Knowledge of substance use disorders, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and relapse prevention.
- Strong administrative, communication, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Compassionate, culturally sensitive, and committed to ethical social work practice.
Desirable Attributes:
- Experience in a residential or inpatient setting.
- Familiarity with the 12-Step model and community recovery programs.
- Ability to manage complex client dynamics with empathy and firmness.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills are an advantage.
Working Conditions:
- Full-time, some weekend or evening shifts may be required.
- Based on-site at a residential rehabilitation facility.
- May involve occasional home visits or external meetings.
