Purpose of the position
The Fire Protection Systems Draughtsman is responsible for producing precise, code-compliant design and installation drawings for fire protection systems including sprinklers, hydrants, hose reels, water mist, fire detection, escape plans and gas suppression. This role ensures technical accuracy, compliance with local and international fire protection standards, and supports the engineering team through all project phases—from concept to as-built. and alarm system layout drawings, schematics, and as-built documentation in compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., SANS 10139, NFPA, BS). This role plays a critical part in supporting the design, coordination, and installation of fire detection systems across various commercial and industrial, projects.
Responsibilities and duties
1. Technical Drawing and Documentation
- Produce fire detection system drawings including layouts, block diagrams, schematic diagrams, and point schedules.
- Draft floor plans, ceiling plans, and containment layouts showing fire detectors, panels, sounders, manual call points (MCPs), interface units, and other associated devices.
- Generate detailed as-built drawings post-installation.
- Maintain drawing revision control and manage drawing registers.
2. Design Support
- Collaborate with Fire Engineers and Designers to translate concepts and specifications into technical drawings.
- Ensure designs adhere to SANS 10139, SANS 10400-T, NFPA, and other relevant fire codes and standards.
- Conduct basic calculations for device coverage areas and cable routing.
- Assist with compiling bill of quantities (BOQ) from design documents.
3. Site and Project Coordination
- Work with project managers, site supervisors, and technicians to coordinate drawing requirements and resolve design queries.
- Attend site inspections and coordination meetings when required.
- Update drawings based on site mark-ups and redline changes.
4. Software and Technology
- Use AutoCAD (2D) and/or Revit (BIM) for all fire detection system designs.
- Manage digital drawing files in accordance with project document control procedures.
- Use project collaboration tools (e.g., SharePoint, Procore, or BIM 360) for submission and document handling.

Required Qualifications & Experience
- National Diploma or Certificate in Draughting (Mechanical, Electrical, or Fire Protection specialization preferred).
- Minimum 2-5 years' experience in fire detection or MEP draughting environment.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (Revit/BIM experience advantageous).
- Familiarity with fire detection standards such as SANS 10139, SANS 246, EN 54, NFPA 72, etc.
- Experience working on commercial buildings, healthcare facilities, data centers, or industrial plants.
Preferred Additional Skills
- Knowledge of fire suppression and protection systems (sprinklers, gas suppression, etc.)
- Ability to generate 3D models and clash detection using Revit or Navisworks.
- Basic knowledge of electrical reticulation relating to fire alarm cabling.
