Where will the position fit in?
We are looking for a flexible and skilled Floating Technician to support fibre network operations across multiple areas and teams. This role requires a technician who can adapt quickly, respond to network incidents, and assist with installations, maintenance, and troubleshooting wherever needed. You will play a key role in maintaining service quality and supporting high-demand regions.
Job Duties:
- Assist in the installation of network infrastructure and equipment as per site plan.
- Monitor and maintain boot stock for installation team vehicles.
- Responsible for the electrical and hard tool inventory to be used for site installations.
- Adhere to standard health and safety regulations.
- Provide technical support across various teams and areas based on operational needs.
- Perform fibre splicing, testing, and fault-finding to restore connectivity.
- Support fibre installations for residential, business, and backhaul clients.
- Respond to network outages and service disruptions across multiple zones.
- Conduct preventive maintenance checks on fibre infrastructure.
- Collaborate with route teams, NOC, and contractors to ensure network uptime.
- Maintain accurate records of work completed and update relevant systems.
- Assist with emergency call-outs and after-hours support as needed.
- Ensure all work is completed according to health, safety, and quality standards.
Requirements:
- Matric Certificate (Grade 12)
- Proven experience in cable floating, installation, or related cable work.
- Familiarity with cable blowing machines, compressors, and hand/power tools.
- Valid Driver’s License (Code B) and own reliable transport
- 2+ years of experience in fibre installation, splicing, or maintenance
- Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
- Willingness to travel between regions and work on a rotating standby schedule
- Excellent communication, time management, and adaptability
- Ability to work independently and in diverse environments
- Physical ability to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and perform tasks outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Will be required to assist with minor Operations related tasks.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with fiber optic cable handling and installation.
- Knowledge of cable test equipment (e.g., OTDR, DIT).
- Basic knowledge of network systems and infrastructure.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and schematics.
