Job Advert Summary
The Head of Growth will lead the charge in expanding growth of our existing revenue streams (membership, events, grant funding) but not including advertising.
They will be responsible for setting the strategy and OKRs of each division and seeking out new potential revenue opportunities. They will bring focus, urgency and clarity to what matters most: meaningful, sustainable growth and successful lead and manage the people working in the growth team.
Minimum Requirements
To be a successful Chief Growth Officer for Daily Maverick, a candidate would need a strong combination of strategic, leadership, and operational abilities.
Knowledge:
A successful candidate must have a deep understanding of:
- Revenue streams particularly the membership/subscription economy.
- Marketing funnels, consumer behaviour and copywriting in a variety of formats (long form mailer to micro-copy).
- Translating organisation and editorial strategies to compelling pitches and reports.
Skills:
Key skills include:
- Strategic Planning: Setting and executing growth strategies across audience, membership, marketing, and partnerships.
- Leadership & Communication: The ability to serve on an executive team, lead communications for internal and external stakeholders, and foster an entrepreneurial, innovative culture. Comfortable with public speaking on behalf of Daily Maverick at conferences, events and high level meetings.
- Business Development: Pitching bold ideas and a vision to build partnerships and secure funding from grant funders, high-net-worth individuals, and sponsors.
- Writing: A confident writer capable of transforming complex topics and ideas into easy-to-understand copy written for busy readers whilst, at the same time, creating an emotional connection with the reader. The ability to sell ideas and relay a bold vision.
- Financial Acumen: Overseeing budgets and reporting for various revenue streams.
- Audience Development: Setting strategic priorities for the full funnel, from newsletter growth to membership acquisition, engagement and retention.
- Product Incubation: Identifying and developing new products and revenue opportunities.
- A Builder with a Bias for Action: You not only spot the opportunity but seize it.
- Strong Organisational Skills, and ability to hold people to account and inspire excellence.
Duties and Responsibilities
A successful candidate would likely have a bachelor's or master's degree in a relevant field such as marketing, business administration, or communications. Significant experience in a senior leadership role, particularly in a growth-oriented position, start-ups and with a start-up mindset is advantageous.
