Key Duties of a Plumber – Residential New Build
Installation of Plumbing Systems
- Laying and connecting water supply lines from municipal mains to the home.
- Installing cold and hot water systems, including geysers and circulation pumps.
- Fitting pipes, valves, taps, and fixtures throughout the house (kitchen, bathroom, laundry, etc.).
- Installing waste and sewer lines and connecting to the municipal or septic system.
Reading and Interpreting Plans
- Reading blueprints and construction drawings to understand pipe layouts and system designs.
- Ensuring pipe routes and fixture placements match architectural and engineering plans.
- Marking out pipe runs accurately to avoid conflicts with electrical and structural work.
Fixture and Appliance Installation
- Installing sanitaryware such as:
- Toilets
- Basins
- Showers
- Baths
- Kitchen sinks and mixers
- Connecting appliances like washing machines, dishwashers, and geysers to water supply and drainage.
Testing and Commissioning
- Pressure testing water systems for leaks before final inspection.
- Checking for correct flow rates, drainage efficiency, and temperature regulation.
- Ensuring compliance with SANS plumbing standards and municipal regulations.
On-Site Coordination
- Working with builders, electricians, and tilers to ensure timing and placement of installations align with overall project progress.
- Making necessary adjustments or rerouting if clashes occur during other trades' work.
General Plumbing Duties
- Cutting, bending, and joining pipes using hand and power tools.
- Applying sealants and adhesives to ensure watertight fittings.
- Measuring and marking out walls and floors before drilling or channelling.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
- Using correct PPE (gloves, goggles, masks) while working.
- Ensuring work area is clean, safe, and free from hazards.
- Avoiding contamination of potable water supply and preventing cross-connections.
Skills & Requirements
- Knowledge of SANS building and plumbing regulations.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and schematics.
- Competency in welding or joining various piping materials (PVC, copper, HDPE, PEX).
- High attention to quality, detail, and safety.
