Job Description
To ensure a safe and legally compliant work environment at the distribution centre by implementing, monitoring, and enforcing health and safety standards in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and internal company policies.
Qualifications & Experience
- Grade 12 / Matric
- SAMTRAC or equivalent HSE qualification (e.g., NEBOSH)
- Registered with SACPCMP (desirable)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in safety in a logistics/warehouse/DC environment
- Strong knowledge of OHSA, environmental legislation, and best practices
- Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
Key Performance Areas
- Health & Safety Compliance
- Ensure full compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, relevant regulations, and company SHE policies.
- Conduct regular site inspections, safety audits, and risk assessments.
- Enforce the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
- Maintain and update safety files, incident records, and inspection reports.
- Training & Awareness
- Conduct safety inductions for new employees, contractors, and visitors.
- Organise and deliver toolbox talks, fire drills, and emergency response training.
- Promote a strong safety culture through ongoing communication and awareness campaigns.
- Incident Management
- Investigate all workplace accidents, near misses, and unsafe acts or conditions.
- Compile incident reports, root cause analyses, and recommend corrective/preventive actions.
- Liaise with HR and management on disciplinary actions related to safety violations.
- Emergency Preparedness
- Maintain and test emergency equipment (fire extinguishers, alarms, first aid kits).
- Monitor emergency exits, signage, and evacuation procedures.
- Coordinate first aiders, fire marshals, and response teams.
- Safety Systems & Documentation
- Ensure accurate and up-to-date records of risk assessments, MSDS, inspections, and permits.
- Support implementation and continuous improvement of SHEQ systems (e.g., ISO 45001).
- Assist with external audits and compliance visits (DOL, inspectors, clients).
- Collaboration & Reporting
- Report safety performance and trends to senior management.
- Work closely with HR, line managers, and supervisors to address safety challenges.
- Represent the site in SHE committee meetings and ensure legal compliance (Section 17 & 18 OHS Act).
