Are you passionate about turning creative concepts into expertly crafted furniture? Do you have a solid understanding of timber, joinery, and how furniture should be designed for both form and function? We’re looking for a Mid-weight Draughtsman to join our product development team and bring precision, clarity, and buildability to every design.
This position will be based in Epping, Cape Town.
Role Overview:
As our Mid-Weight Draughtsman, you’ll play a vital role in transforming conceptual designs into factory-ready products. Working closely with our Buying, Product Development, and Manufacturing teams, you’ll ensure that creative ideas are translated into detailed, technically sound drawings and prototypes — all while maintaining the brand’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
Key Responsibilities:
- Convert concept designs into detailed, accurate technical drawings and 3D models for review and production.
- Prepare comprehensive design packs and Bills of Materials (BOMs), ensuring all components are correctly specified.
- Brief approved designs to our in-house WFCF and WFCU teams for prototyping.
- Drive and oversee the prototyping process, ensuring alignment with design intent and production feasibility.
- Work hands-on with production and machine operators to troubleshoot and refine prototypes.
- Develop and maintain a digital library of technical drawings across all furniture ranges.
- Evaluate and recommend suitable materials, fittings, and joinery methods for both new and existing designs.
What you bring:
- 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in technical furniture design, preferably across solid timber and wood-based materials.
- A formal qualification in Drafting, Industrial Design, or a related field (3-year diploma or higher).
- Excellent technical drawing skills and proficiency in AutoCAD, Fusion 360 & Solidworks (or similar CAD software).
- Able to model full assemblies with clarity and design intent.
- Practical understanding of woodworking techniques, joinery methods, and manufacturing processes.
- Experience working with CNC machines or programming is advantageous.
- Proven ability to manage time, meet deadlines, and drive projects from concept through to production.
- Comfortable communicating with both creative teams and factory staff.
- Comfortable working closely with factory staff to resolve technical issues quickly and accurately.
- A self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
- A valid driver’s license and reliable transport are required.
- Passionate about the Weylandts brand and offering.
Competencies and behaviours for success:
- Proactive and hands-on with a strong sense of ownership.
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively across departments.
- Resilient under pressure and solutions oriented.
- Energetic, motivated, and aligned with the brand’s aesthetic and values.
- Strong communication skills, calm under pressure, able to track and resolve issues logically.
What we Offer
- A collaborative, creative workspace with a respected design and manufacturing team.
- Hands-on involvement in the development of iconic, well-crafted furniture pieces.
- Competitive remuneration and growth opportunities within a design-led business.
- A meaningful role where your technical skills have a direct impact on product success.
