Description:
Responsible for the safe and efficient management of underground coal mining operations at Uitkomst Colliery. The Mine Overseer ensures that production targets are met in compliance with legal, safety, and operational standards. This role involves managing teams, maintaining equipment and infrastructure, ensuring adherence to Mine Health and Safety Act requirements, and driving operational excellence.
Requirements:
- Mine Overseer Certificate of Competency (Coal) – Essential
- Grade 12 or NQF Level 4 qualification
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in an underground coal mining environment, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or overseer role
- Valid Blasting Certificate for Coal Mines
- Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act and other relevant mining legislation
- Proven leadership and people management skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English and at least one other South African language relevant to the workforce
- Proficiency in mine planning software will be an advantage
- Must be medically fit for underground work
Key Performance Areas:
Production Management
- Plan, manage, and coordinate underground coal mining operations to meet daily, weekly, and monthly production targets
- Ensure efficient allocation of manpower, machinery, and resources
- Monitor and manage mining cycles, quality control, and cost efficiency
Safety, Health, and Environment
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and company policies
- Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments
- Implement and enforce safety improvement initiatives
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, motivate, and develop crews to achieve operational excellence
- Conduct performance appraisals and identify training needs
- Promote a culture of accountability and continuous improvement
Legal Compliance & Administration
- Maintain statutory logbooks, production reports, and shift reports
- Ensure all activities comply with the Mine Health and Safety Act, Codes of Practice, and internal procedures
- Prepare and submit operational and compliance reports to management
