Public Affairs Consultant
Experience Level: Mid to Senior
Role Overview:
The Public Affairs Consultant will support and collaborate closely with the Founder/Partner in leading key client engagements, managing complex stakeholder environments, developing policy positioning strategies, and driving execution. This role is ideal for a politically savvy, analytical, and solutions-oriented individual who thrives in fast-paced, high-impact environments.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Advisory & Client Engagement
- Serve as a strategic advisor to clients across sectors on matters of public policy, stakeholder engagement, and regulatory affairs.
- Manage day-to-day execution of client mandates with a high level of professionalism and insight.
- Translate complex political, policy, and regulatory developments into actionable insights for clients.
Stakeholder & Government Relations
- Build and maintain trusted relationships with government officials, industry bodies, media, and civil society.
- Develop and execute stakeholder mapping and engagement strategies.
- Monitor political and legislative developments and assess potential impacts on clients.
Thought Leadership & Content
- Draft briefing notes, position papers, op-eds, strategy documents, and presentations.
- Contribute to the firm’s thought leadership through public commentary and insights on current affairs.
Team & Operational Support
- Act as the right-hand to the Founder in managing the firm’s operations, project delivery, and internal coordination.
- Mentor junior consultants and support business development initiatives.
- Help shape the company’s culture and strategic direction as part of the leadership team.
Required Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Law, Communications, International Relations, or related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- 6–10 years of relevant experience in public affairs, policy advisory, government relations, corporate affairs, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of the South African political, policy, and regulatory landscape.
- Demonstrated experience engaging with public sector stakeholders at various levels.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and manage complex client portfolios.
