Learning Manager, South Africa (Independent Contractor)

Location: South Africa (remote) with priority given to candidates in the Eastern Cape. Travel locally, and occasional travel internationally to Kenya and the UK
Salary: 441,000 - 513,000 ZAR per annum full-time equivalent, dependent on experience
Basis: Contractor (12 months with possible extension)
Eligibility: You must be eligible to work in South Africa.

The role

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has developed a set of world-leading learning experiences that support computing education for young people aged 6-18 years old, addressing both formal education and non-formal learning contexts. This includes:

  • A complete sequence of lesson resources, online courses, and interactive questions to support the teaching and learning of computing and computer science in schools
  • Content to support facilitators and their young people to engage with computing and digital making in our network of Code Clubs.

Our aim is to further develop these products to benefit learners across South Africa by deeply understanding the local context and by designing and delivering educator training in South Africa to support the delivery of the Coding and Robotics Curriculum.

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is looking for an experienced educator and trainer to support this work. This project will involve:

  • Collaboration with our UK and Kenya based teams to design curriculum sequences for multiple grades in South Africa
  • Adapting existing lesson materials (slides, worksheets, lesson plans, etc) to suit the needs of learners in South Africa
  • Designing and delivering training and leading the delivery of the Approved Trainer initiative in South Africa, quality assuring a network of community trainers.
  • Establishing and building relationships with curriculum officials working on the Coding & Robotics curriculum and the wider ecosystem such as NGOs.

The ideal candidate will have a qualification in computer science or a related subject, with a teaching qualification or significant experience of teaching and experience designing and delivering training in South Africa. You will need to be comfortable with a wide range of hardware and software, and be eager to learn more.

We strive to make the Foundation a place where talented people who care about our mission can do the best work of their careers. We have a flexible and collaborative approach to all aspects of our work. If you're the right person for this role, we'll make it work for you, and you can be confident that you'll be working with an exceptional team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver learning experiences, content, resources, and training for the Foundation's educational programmes and products
  • Ensure that learning experiences, content, resources, and training reflect evidence-based pedagogy and the Foundation's agreed approaches to teaching and learning across formal education and non-formal learning
  • Lead the Approved Trainer initiative in South Africa, building and quality assuring a network of community trainers
  • Contribute to the development of the Foundation's teaching and learning approaches. Actively engage with research and best practice, and identify areas for improvement and innovation
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation and external partners
  • Engage positively with the Foundation's systems for quality assurance, including in relation to agreed policies for inclusion and accessibility
  • Proactively utilise user feedback and data to drive improvement
  • Represent the Raspberry Pi Foundation to external audiences and stakeholders as required
  • Contribute to the Foundation's thought leadership through writing articles and blogs, public speaking, and contributing to research and evaluation.

Experience and personal attributes

We recognise that everyone has the potential for growth, and we welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they have some, but not all, of the experience and personal attributes listed here.

  • A thorough understanding of computing, with a suitable qualification in computer science or a related subject
  • A teaching qualification, or significant experience of teaching computing or a related subject
  • Experience designing synchronous and/or asynchronous training experiences for adult educators
  • Experience of delivering high quality learning experiences, content, resources, or training in South African schools
  • Comfortable with a broad range of technologies, including hardware and software platforms, and the ability and willingness to learn new technologies as required
  • An understanding of computing pedagogy within formal education and non-formal learning
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a collaborative approach to working with colleagues and external partners
  • Willingness to travel within South Africa and to the UK and Kenya if required
  • A commitment to the Foundation's mission and values, including on diversity, equity, and inclusion.

About us

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is an independent charity with a global mission to enable all young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technologies.

We empower schools to teach computer science and AI literacy through free curricula, classroom resources, purpose built software tools, and professional development for teachers. We inspire young people to become tech creators through the world's largest networks of coding clubs. We undertake original research that informs our work and which we use to advance the field of computer science education more broadly.

All of our resources and learning experiences are available for anyone to use at no cost. We are particularly focused on creating opportunities for young people who experience educational disadvantage and those who come from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in technology industries.

Over the past decade, we have supported hundreds of thousands of educators and tens of millions of students. We have teams in six countries (India, Ireland, Kenya, South Africa, the UK and US) and partnerships with mission-aligned non-profit organisations in over 60 countries.

We are at the forefront of the global educational movement to expand access to computer science education and AI literacy. You can learn more about our work in our latest Annual Report.
